NY/NJ Metro Section June Meeting – Healthcare Process Improvement – Early Sepsis Identification

Sepsis is associated with a high risk of mortality. The number of deaths in US due to sepsis has increased from 154,159 in 2000 to 207,427 in 2007. The main objective of this presentation is to demonstrate utilization of process improvement and system redesign methodologies for the purpose of improving broad spectrum antibiotics administration within 1 hour of severe sepsis/septic shock recognition, and studying its effect on mortality.

Priyanka Bangale, MBBS, MHA, is a Clinical Data Manager at NYU Lutheran Medical Center. She received her Medical Degree from Mumbai, India in 2009 then received her Master’s Degree in Healthcare Administration from Cornell University in 2011. She has been working at NYU Lutheran since 2011 on various CMS quality improvement initiatives with the goal of improving NYU Lutheran’s performance in various publically reported programs including Inpatient and Outpatient Quality Reporting Programs, hospital Wide Readmissions, and Sepsis Quality Improvement Initiative.

Avneet Ahluwalia is a Lean Management professional with over 15 years of experience in the healthcare industry. She received her Bachelors’ Degree in Psychobiology from New York University and her Master’s Degree in Information Systems from New Jersey Institute of Technology. She recently joined the Patient Safety & Quality Department at Hackensack Meridian Health as a Project Manager. While at NYU Lutheran Medical Center she developed and implemented strategies with leadership to advance Population Health Management. Her team leveraged operational excellence principles to ensure receipt of $9.1 million funding for the hospital.
