Long Island Section – Crypto-currencies and Their Role in Society

February 15, 2018 @ 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM EST

Free

Presenter: Ed Lehner, Ph.D.
Dr. Lehner is an Assistant Professor at the City University of New York who researches educational funding via cryptocurrency. His work proposes an innovative type of research fund using altcoins. These coins use technologies to collateralize the network and speed the pace of transactions. Additionally, these coins pay dividends, so an institution that purchases these coins could potentially engage in a lucrative form of dividend reinvestment. Using cryptocurrencies as a new funding stream, it is possible that simply garnering large amounts of capital and creating a nonprofit “institute” could be the future of funding scientific research.
